Bringing Digital and AI Literacy into the Classroom: Slovakia’s Curriculum Roadshow
How will children learn under Slovakia’s new curriculum — and where does AI fit in? In August 2026, a nationwide curriculum roadshow brought these questions directly to teachers, parents and children.
Organised by the Ministry of Education, the roadshow visited all eight regional capitals and welcomed nearly 15,000 visitors. Almost 5,000 children joined hands-on activities, while nearly 100 experts offered demonstrati
ons and discussions about curriculum reform. Within this broader programme, we presented practical ways to develop digital and AI literacy across subjects.
In Slovakia, AI literacy is understood as an integral part of digital competence. From September 2026, the updated State Educational Programme embeds it within cross-curricular digital literacy, supporting its development across all subjects.
Through practical examples, we showed teachers and parents how children can learn both about AI — understanding its principles, limitations and impacts — and with AI, using it thoughtfully to support learning and creativity. Examples included comparing pupils’ writing with AI-generated texts in language lessons, exploring data and errors in mathematics, and discussing AI’s social impact in citizenship education.
Throughout these conversations, we emphasised safe and ethical use: protecting personal information, checking AI outputs and acknowledging AI assistance. Activities illustrated how teachers can integrate these skills into everyday learning while nurturing pupils’ independent thinking.
The roadshow gave families and educators a practical glimpse of how the new curriculum connects classroom learning with the digital world.
