A definition of the term digital wellbeing in Czech Republic

Digital education today brings new challenges. The National Pedagogical Institute of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with the Partnership for Education 2030+, has published a definition of digital wellbeing, intended to serve as a common framework for further discussion, research, and practical implementation in educational settings. The authors focus on the balance between the use of digital technologies and the mental, physical, and social health of all actors in education. The document presents digital wellbeing as the ability to work with technology in a conscious, safe, and meaningful way—in alignment with personal development, educational goals, and social relationships.

The term digital wellbeing was deliberately retained in English, as Czech equivalents such as “duševní pohoda” (“mental wellbeing”) fail to fully capture the scope of the concept and may be misleading. Choosing an appropriate and precise term is, according to the authors, essential to enable a clear and consistent discourse—both in professional and public contexts.

The National Pedagogical Institute and the Partnership for Education 2030+ will continue to develop this topic and are preparing further initiatives aimed at supporting healthy and meaningful use of technology in education. Updates on these activities will be shared gradually.
