FCL 4.0 Launch: Redefining Pedagogy, Technology, and Learning Spaces in Denmark
At Future Classroom Lab Denmark, staying at the forefront of educational development requires continuous evolution. To keep our lab relevant, active, and innovative, and to maintain a forward-looking perspective on emerging pedagogical opportunities, we rethink and redesign what FCL represents in a Danish and International context approximately every two years. On September 2nd, 2026, this ongoing commitment to spatial and pedagogical innovation culminated in the official grand opening of FCL 4.0.
Located at Campus Carlsberg at University College Copenhagen (KP) and the Centre for Educational Resources (CFU), the lab unveiled its most ambitious transformation to date. The inauguration event brought together pre-service teachers, school leaders, researchers, policymakers, and leading EdTech partners to explore how physical surroundings, material exploration, and cutting-edge tools can be combined to support 21st-century learning.
The Playful Journey: Didactic Entrepreneurship and Innovative Muscles
In this newest iteration, FCL 4.0 seamlessly weaves spatial design, digital empowerment, and material exploration into a single cohesive story. The physical space invites visitors into a deeply playful environment where learning unfolds through hands-on engagement with tactile materials and an open mindset toward iteration. FCL 4.0 is not a place designed to give off-the-shelf answers; rather, it is a space where you leave with more questions than when you arrived—sparking continuous reflection and curiosity. At its core, the lab is an engine for didactic entrepreneurship, focusing sharply on emerging, innovative teaching practices. It functions as a dynamic gym designed to stretch, train, and strengthen the innovative muscles of educators, school leaders, industry partners and policymakers alike.
Central to this approach is our Trash Library / Scrap Lab, a curated sanctuary of upcycled materials, discarded electronics, toys and everyday objects. Here, the immediate focus shifts away from flawless final products and toward the process of tinkering. By encouraging learners to mess around, construct, and deconstruct using low-cost or repurposed items, the space cultivates a crucial culture of "fejlmodighed" - the courage to fail, iterate, and embrace mistakes as necessary stepping stones in the creative learning journey.
This tactile experimentation naturally connects to broader technological care and curiosity. As learners dismantle old hardware in breaker spaces or repair broken items in mending hubs, they break open the "black box" of modern devices or hack and redesign. Physical tinkering seamlessly merges with digital exploration, VR/AR spatial environments, and AI literacy tools, bridging playful analog building with complex computational concepts.
Professional Development Beyond Borders: Scaling Innovation Across The Galaxy
A central ambition of FCL 4.0 is to function as a vibrant bridge for professional development across national borders. As part of the broader European Schoolnet network, FCL Denmark serves as both an incubator for Danish pedagogical practices and a gateway for international knowledge exchange.
The lab is designed to host cross-border workshops, joint research initiatives, and international teacher exchanges, creating a shared space where educators from different countries can collaborate on how to translate technology / AI literacies and playful learning into diverse classroom cultures. By connecting local practice with International expertise, FCL 4.0 acts as a living laboratory for upskilling the next generation of teachers, providing scalable models that inspire learning environments far beyond Denmark’s borders.
Through strong strategic partnerships with EdTech pioneers, furniture design specialists, and educational institutions, FCL 4.0 ensures that visiting teachers work directly with cutting-edge tools tested within a grounded, research-backed framework.
Empowering the Next Generation of Educators
The launch of FCL 4.0 marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in professional development. Through targeted action-research initiatives, hands-on masterclasses, and collaborative learning communities, the lab will continue to bridge the gap between national priorities and practical classroom instruction.
By constantly refreshing our space and approach every two years, FCL Denmark remains dedicated to inspiring educators to rethink how physical environments, tinkering, and digital tools can unlock creative, active learning for all students.
We extend our sincere thanks to all our partners, colleagues, and international guests who joined us on September 2nd to celebrate the opening of FCL 4.0.
