Luxembourg's Approach to AI in Education: Guidelines Meet Practice
Last October, Luxembourg's Ministry of Education released national AI guidelines for schools — the KI Kompass — providing a framework for how AI should be used in education. To turn policy into practice, IFEN (our national institute for continuous professional development) is setting up communities of practice across the country. These are structured groups where teachers meet regularly to exchange ideas, experiment with AI in their own classrooms, and share what they learn with peers — guided by experienced facilitators.
The communities can focus on specific tools, particular subjects, experience levels, or broader questions around AI in teaching. We started with national groups, and are now gradually moving towards local communities of practice run directly inside schools, moderated by teachers who have been trained by IFEN. The idea is straightforward: rather than top-down instructions, teachers co-develop practical approaches together — trying things out, reporting back, and refining as they go. It's still early days, but this is the path Luxembourg is taking to bridge the gap between AI policy and everyday classroom reality.
