Rauma Teacher Training School’s Balcony Learning Environment
Rauma Teacher Training School’s Future Classroom Lab (FCLab) team has co-created an innovative balcony learning environment that extends learning beyond the traditional classroom walls. Designed as an outdoor demo space, the balcony supports student‑centred, flexible and wellbeing‑oriented pedagogy aligned with the Future Classroom Lab framework.
The space enables a variety of learning scenarios, including individual reflection, collaborative group work, inquiry‑based learning and creative co-design activities. Adaptable furniture and a reconfigurable layout allow teachers and pupils to easily transform the space according to different pedagogical intentions. Learning in close connection with fresh air, daylight and natural elements strengthens pupils’ wellbeing, engagement and concentration.
A core principle of the project is co-design: pupils worked alongside teachers and the FCLab team in participatory workshops to shape the environment. Although clearly an outdoor space, the balcony is designed for year‑round use and retains its open character. The balcony learning environment serves as a scalable example of how innovative learning environments, pedagogy and wellbeing can be meaningfully combined within the Future Classroom Lab approach.
