“School from Future”, a new approach to the School System Design

The "School from Future" model developed at Polo Fermi-Giorgi in Lucca, which recently joined the FCL Eun network, embodies a forward-thinking educational paradigm. It moves beyond the traditional notion of knowledge transmission to establish an open learning ecosystem that fosters collaboration among all stakeholders in education: teachers, students, families, local authorities, universities, businesses, and non-profit organizations.

A Vision of Transformation

Implementing this ambitious vision requires a systemic model that embraces participatory and collaborative dynamics through a multiplex approach 1. The conventional concept of "school" is expanded to include additional dimensions that enrich the educational system and curriculum-driven learning.

This project introduces a broader perspective on learning that transcends classroom boundaries. It integrates civic engagement and Service Learning into an ecosystemic framework, facilitated through partnerships with public and private organizations, with particular attention to the involvement of local communities.

The Role of the Future Learning Lab (FLL)

At the heart of this vision lies the Future Learning Lab (FLL), a hub for innovation and experimentation seamlessly integrated into the school's core activities. Designed as a "learning archipelago," the FLL operates as a Research and Educational Innovation Center supported by INDIRE. It progresses through:

1. Rigorous research on targeted educational themes.

2. Validation of experimental practices.

3. Gradual implementation of validated approaches into mainstream education through pilot programs.

Systemic Levels and Relationships

The proposed framework functions through interconnected levels, dynamically adapting to the nature and objectives of specific relationships. This fluid and responsive design ensures flexibility and coherence across the system:

  1. School Level: This encompasses core curricular activities leading to formal qualifications, including Civic Education, Career Guidance, and Work-Based Learning Programs (PCTO). The FLL serves as a regional innovation hub, linking over 40 schools in the Lucca Province with the Regional Education Office and key local institutions.
  1. INDIRE Level: This level supports teacher development through research and validation of innovative educational practices. Teachers actively contribute by implementing and refining methodologies, which are subsequently incorporated into a catalog of system-wide resources after validation.
  1. School Networks Level: Partner schools collaborate actively with the FLL through site visits, online professional development sessions, and contributions to the FLL's catalog of activities.
